Mat Placement, Hit Power, and Cord Length
The ideal ball return occurs when the ball swings behind and below the Swingback, then springs off the front of the net back to the player. The ball should not touch the ground near the Swingback and only bounce once near the mat. The player should stand behind the mat, but for soft hitting and warmup the player can stand next to the mat.
1. If the ball bounces behind the Swingback or does not return, then either move the mat away from the Swingback or decrease cord length.
2. If the ball does not reach the Swingback or only hits the backside without swinging under the net, then either move the mat closer to the Swingback, increase cord length.
3. When beginning you most likely will need to move the mat several times to achieve your preferred ball flight.
Once you achieve your desired ball return, consistent hit power with a consistent ball trajectory will continue to produce the same ball return.
Cord Care
To get the most out of your cord:
1. Each time you miss a shot check the cord for tangles.
2. Tangles are very rare with continued use.
3. Store cords away from harsh conditions.
4. The Penn balls feature an extended-life pressureless core, and durable felt. Hit power and surface conditions will influence durability. On a smooth surface, beginners and intermediate players can expect 1o to 12 hours per ball, advanced players 8 to 10 hours, expert players 6 to 8 hours. When the ball wears out, simply tie a new ball to the end of the cord or attach a new ball-cord to the mat.
5. Cord breaks are rare though may happen for 5.0 players and above. Cord breaks are designed to occur at the ball allowing for an easy fix. Simply tie the ball back on to the cord.
